Small Southern Charm
The quaint villages of Highlands and Cashiers provide modern comforts and amenities. The town of Highlands is a desirable escape for those withering in summertime — Barron’s ranked it in the top 20 places to keep a second home. Highlands owes it’s cooler weather to it’s altitude and gentle summer breezes. Astride the Eastern Continental Divide, at just over 4,100 feet, Highlands is one of the very rare locations at this latitude that has an average high of only 78°F in July, far lower than the rest of the South.
Cashiers is a quaint Blue Ridge village just 10 minutes to the east of Old Edwards Club. During the warmer months, visitors flock to this tiny burg to enjoy cool weather, scenic views, fine dining, outdoor recreation and small-town elegance.
Shopping, Dining, History
Both Highlands and Cashiers offer an excellent shopping experience, including antiques, arts, jewelry, home décor, florals and more. In Highlands, the Scudders Galleries auction season begins each June. Visitors will also find plentiful dining options, including fine and casual restaurants, wineries and breweries, coffee shops, cafes and more.
These two communities offer the grace and allure of yesteryear, with placid streets and well-manicured landscaping. There are a number of homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
Rock, wood and water attain their highest form when they come together as a waterfall. People who can’t agree on anything else seem to always agree on the beauty of a waterfall! According to Mark Morrison, author of the book Waterfall Walks and Drives in the Great Smoky Mountains and Western North Carolina, each waterfall is faceted differently. Some have beauty that is big and bold, others have delicate and subtle characteristics. One thing is for certain; in this region you could explore for a lifetime and not see them all.
Western North Carolina is blessed to have over one million acres of national forests, national parks, state parks, and other public lands for our enjoyment and use. The Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests comprise most of this land, including miles and miles of hiking trails.
Our state parks offer the same activities and contain some of the lesser known hidden jewels. And new state parks are still being developed!
Men and women with extraordinary vision preserved these special places and are constantly working to save more and improve what has already been saved. They do this because they love the land, they love the beauty Mother Nature has bestowed upon this area, and because they want to share it with you, and everyone that will take the time to get out and experience it.
Welcome to one of Nature’s Greatest fishing paradises! Bring the family or a group of friends, because you’ll make many memories and have great fish tales to pass on! Whether you prefer fishing on lakes or in streams and rivers, there’s a perfect spot to drop your line.
Some great options include Harris Lake, Cliffside Lake Recreation Area and other in-town and surrounding-area lakes. Cliffside Lake, in particular, is stocked with Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout.
There are also several fantastic rivers that anglers around here love, including the Cullasaja and the Chattooga.
